HI guys, Welcome back to ATTICS. As you can tell from the cover picture, today's post is in the beauty category.
I’m one of those people who has so much stuff everywhere, but that doesn’t stop me from buying more. I'm very attached to my beauty products especially those that are for skincare and I buy multiple at a time because I have an irrational fear of running out😫. I've been cleaning out my closest for the past few weeks and I'm taking stock of my beauty products as well.
It recently occurred to me that people tend to forget, makeup has an expiry date. I was talking to some friends over the weekend, one guy and a girl who's also a blogger and they both had no idea that makeup expires. To make things easy for you, with help from some reliable sources on the internet, I've put together a guide of when it's time to say goodbye to some of your everyday and luxury beauty products.
3-6 months. but to be on the absolute safest side you should use it within 3 months.
Real experience - I’ve used tubes of mascara for 5-6months and no eye infections yet. It’s one of those products which i pretty much wear everyday so it doesn’t actually last more than 6 months for me. Let's get right into it.
The experts recommend using a tube of lipstick for a year. I think this is a little too short. Who’s going to use a whole tube of lipstick in a year especially when you have 10+ tubes. However, if you've had the tube for a while and you feel like it might have gone off, please follow this rule.
Liquid foundation and concealer. I’m slightly embarrassed to say this y’all but I’ve had my MAC NC45 concealer pot for like 4 years now 👀 Think what you want but the consistency hasn’t changed and it still works like the first time. now why would I toss a perfectly good pot of concealer. I wouldn’t. p.s I like to live on the edge. Follow my footsteps with caution.
These are safe to use for up to 2 years.
Powder, Blush and Eyeshadow
You only have one year to use these before you should toss them.
Skincare products and moisturizers
1-2 year. I think this is fair enough. My favorite products don’t last more than 6 months (facial lotions included). I think the longest lasting skinccaser product I have is my Kiehl's night time moisture mask. You only need a little and it comes in a generous container. My advice for keeping items like this germ free is to use a plastic spatular or something similar to dip into it instead of using fingers.
NoTe: even if a product hasn't reached its expiry date, In general its unsafe to continue using it, if:
It looks different
It has been exposed to extremes heat ( aside: i once left my lipstick in the car and it melt. i fixed the shape a little and put it in the freezer. I still use it today but not a lot because i don’t even like the color like that)
It smells different
